Why a high HH tent still leaks
HH is a swatch rating. Water in camp finds the cheapest path, and that path is almost never the middle of a new panel.
Seams are holes
Every stitch is a puncture. Factory tape is supposed to close those holes. Alton’s explainer is blunt: when tents leak, it is usually construction, damage, or unsealed seams, not the fabric rating. Condensation is not a leak
Breath and wet clothes load the inner with vapor. On a cold fly it beads and drips. That water did not come through the coating. More HH often means a thicker PU film and worse vapor movement, which makes the drip worse. Crack a vent before you blame the millimeter rating.
What a bigger millimeter number does not buy you
Jacket HH and tent HH share a lab method and almost nothing else. Advnture’s clothing bands start around 10,000 mm because a pack strap and a bent elbow add contact pressure a fly never sees. Do not shop a tent as if it were a hardshell.
SlingFin’s coating note is the one most buying guides skip. Polyurethane is hydrophilic: it absorbs water over time, so brands print a high starting HH to leave room for wetting-out and UV loss. Silicone and PE coatings are hydrophobic, so a lower printed number can outlast a fatter PU figure. A 1,200 mm silicone fly is not “less waterproof” than a 5,000 mm PU fly in the way hangtags imply.
Thicker PU adds weight and stiffness, and it can reduce tear strength. Ultralight makers stay near 1,200–1,500 mm on purpose. Family cabin tents go higher because they are not being carried and because large, flatter roof panels pond water if the pitch is slack.
PU also hydrolyses if the tent is stored damp: sticky fabric, a vinegar smell, coating that flakes. A 10,000 mm starting number will not save a tent left wet in a hot garage.
