How to Store a Cordless Pressure Washer After a Cleaning Job
A step-by-step put-away routine for cordless washers: handle trapped water and pressure, look after hose fittings, and keep the unit indoors away from frost.

To store a cordless pressure washer after a cleaning job, take three steps in order. First, release the pressure and drain the water still in the system. Next, take care of the hose connections. Last, put the washer somewhere that meets your model's storage conditions.

A cordless washer still holds water and pressure after you turn it off, so it isn't a dry-only tool. Use our NB8 Ultra manual as a practical example, then follow your own model's manual wherever its steps differ.

A Model-Aware Put-Away Sequence

Check your exact model name first, since draining steps and storage rules can vary from one washer to the next. Then work through this sequence:

  1. Handle the water left inside. Release trapped pressure, then drain any remaining liquid using your model's steps. For the NB8 Ultra, that means releasing pressure before you unhook the high-pressure hose and draining the tank. If you used detergent, rinse the tank as well.
  2. Look after the connections. Unhook the hose only after the pressure is gone. Clean dirty fittings only with a method your manual approves.
  3. Store it under your model's conditions. Pick a spot that matches the temperature and frost rules in your manual.

Good pressure washer storage depends on getting the water step right, because water left in the unit is what freezing weather damages.

How to Handle Water Left in the Washer

On our NB8 Ultra, the manual gives a set order for clearing trapped water and pressure. These steps apply to the NB8 Ultra only. If you have a different washer, follow its manual instead.

  1. If you used detergent, drain it and rinse the tank. Pour out any leftover detergent, then rinse the tank with clean water. The manual requires this whenever detergent was used.
  2. Turn the washer off. Let go of the trigger and lock the trigger lever. Then press the power button on the panel to shut the unit off.
  3. Release the remaining pressure. Squeeze the trigger lever to let out any pressure still in the system. Then release the lever and lock it again.
  4. Detach the high-pressure hose only after that. Wait until no pressure remains before unhooking the hose. Warm water may leak from the connection when you disconnect it after use, so a small drip is normal.
  5. Drain the tank. Remove the tank from the unit and pour out any remaining liquid.

The manual also gives a separate, stricter step for frost protection: drain the washer and all its accessories completely. If the washer and accessories aren't completely drained, frost can destroy them. If the washer will sit somewhere cold, drain everything fully—not just the tank. Before longer storage, such as over the winter, the manual also points you to its care section.

What to Do About Dirt on Connections

The NB8 Ultra's post-use and storage instructions explain how to disconnect the hose, but they don't give a method for cleaning dirt off the connections. Stick to methods your manual approves, since an unapproved cloth, brush, rinse, or cleaner could damage the fittings or seals.

Start by following the safe disconnection order from the water section: make sure there is no pressure in the system before you pull the hose. Then put each part where the manual directs. Take the spray lance off the trigger gun and remove the nozzle from the spray wand. Push the disconnect button and pull the hose out of the trigger gun. Store the gun and both nozzles in their holders, and coil the hose over the hose holder.

If a connection still looks dirty or gritty, ask our team which cleaning method is approved for your exact model through our customer support contact page. If a fitting leaks once you reconnect it, the cause may be the fit rather than dirt. Our guide to M22 and 3/8-inch quick connects explains how a mismatched fitting causes leaks.

Which Storage Conditions Apply to the NB8 Ultra?

The NB8 Ultra manual calls for indoor, frost-free storage. Store the washer indoors so water inside can't expand when it freezes, and keep the product and all its accessories in a frost-free room. The manual lists 41 to 86 °F (5 to 30 °C) as the ideal storage temperature. Treat that as the ideal range rather than a strict cutoff, and note that it applies to this model only, not to every cordless washer.

For a typical U.S. home, that rules out an unheated shed or detached garage in winter. A heated garage, utility room, or indoor closet works better. Before putting the washer away, rinse the tank, put it back with its cap on, and set the unit on a level surface.

The manual also says to store the washer, its parts, and its accessories out of children's reach. To keep dust off, we recommend storing the unit in its original box or covering it with a suitable cloth or cover.

FAQs

Why does water drip when I disconnect the hose?

On the NB8 Ultra, the manual notes that warm water may leak from the connection when you disconnect the high-pressure hose after use. Release the pressure first so you only get a small drip rather than a spray.

Can I use the same storage steps for a different pressure washer?

Not automatically. Draining steps, accessories, and storage limits can vary between models, even within the same brand. Check the manual for your exact model before copying any step or temperature range.

What should I do before storing the washer for the winter?

Drain the washer and all its accessories completely, then store everything in a frost-free room indoors. The NB8 Ultra manual also says to read its care section before long-term storage, such as over the winter.

Does the tank need a rinse even if I only used plain water?

The NB8 Ultra manual ties the required post-use rinse to detergent use. However, its frost-protection steps also start with rinsing the tank with clean water, so rinsing before long-term storage follows the manual either way.
